We have weathered the snow showers and moved into rain showers. The students seem ready for the transition, and ready for the upcoming spring break to relax, recharge and restore themselves for the final push of the school year. Visual Art 1 students have been busy making Modigliani inspired self portraits, tool collage still lives and circle cities. This week they are learning about line creative line compositions and group grid paintings. Basic design folks have been learning about the power of pattern and the geometric paintings of Frank Stella. They have been working on their rules and compass skills in creating beautiful designs full of shapes, color and abstraction. This week they are beginning to design a composition based on the illuminated manuscripts from the middle ages, more on that later! Sculpture students have transitioned from plaster gauze sculptures to subtractive plaster carvings. I apologize if they are coming home a bit dusty, I promise it all washes out. Which reminds me, check out my new page "Dirty Kid? Clean It Up!" that has numerous tips and tricks for cleaning art supplies out of your clothes. As I look back over this year I am amazed by how much the students have learned and matured as young artists and individuals. Many students are starting to keep a digital portfolio and signing up for advanced art classes next year.
